A boy jumps neatly over a wall, running off with more backflips and the like, just as another guy completely runs through the wall, demolishing it. The guy who burst through the wall picks up a log and hurls it at the first guy, who dodges it and runs up a tree. The second guy yells at him, Recca, to come down, or is he scared of fighting the strongest of all the high school students, Ishijima Domon-sama? Recca jumps down to the first limb of the tree, and insults him. Domon runs toward the tree and slams it with his hand, and Recca falls off - but actually, a dummy with his jacket falls out of the tree. Domon yells at him, "I'll have to make you my servant now!" But, Recca has already jumped away from the tree! Landing on top of the wall, Recca produces a handful of fireworks, and throws them at Domon, yelling, "I'm a ninja!" While chasing Recca, Domon suddenly falls into a hidden pit. Yelling up at Recca, he tells him to step up into the current century. Recca lights some firecrackers and throws them into the pit, telling Domon not to insult the ninja. As he walks away, he says, "If you ever beat me, I'll be your personal ninja!"
A swirling image in a crystal ball with a claw on the top grows clearer to reveal Recca walking down the street. A woman's voice says, "Recca..."
At a house, Recca opens the door to his room. He talks about ninja, people who worked in the shadows for the shogun years ago, especially four hundred years ago in the period of civil unrest. On Recca's wall, he has some framed ninja weapons. Recca says that although he doesn't know why, he's always wanted to be a ninja.
Recca approaches his dad, then kicks him in the face when he turns around from making fireworks. Recca then gets kicked back in the face, but proceeds to lecture his dad for smoking while making the fireworks. Recca was looking for food, but his dad has already ate, and tells him to go eat something by himself. Recca thinks, "A ninja's duty is to endure..." but he's very hungry!
The same crystal ball from earlier is still swirling around Recca. The woman's voice says, "No doubt. That is Recca." One blue eye vividly opens.
In a large room with an aquarium, swirling violet flames are burning a man alive. He begs for help, but is ignored. Another man sitting at a desk talks about how meaningless everything is; if one achieves full power, death will still take everything away. The man he is talking to, Kurei, says that if the immortality technique of four hundred years ago still exists, then he will find it - for who knows the Hokage ninja better than him? The screen shows you his face, which is covered by an intricate mask.
Recca is eating a sandwich in a park, when he sees some very young kids running by. Their babysitter, wearing a uniform, calls after them not to run, but they ignore her, and one of them falls down and starts to cry. The girl catches up to them, and picks the child up. Waving her hand over the kid's head, she tells him that it doesn't hurt anymore. When she spots Recca looking at them, she smiles prettily. Recca drops his lunch all over the ground, but when he looks back up, the girl is gone.
Curious to see who she is, he follows at a distance. He sees them watching a construction site, with heavy machinery carrying beans overhead. The children run, but she's protecting the one who didn't. Recca throws them out of the way (and that blue eye from earlier flashes) and gets hit in the head by the beams. The girl runs toward him, and doesn't know what to do. She calls him "Hanabishi-san", and worriedly looking at the crowd around them, she pulls the unconscious, bleeding Recca toward her.
Somewhere else, you see Recca in a ninja outfit, bowing toward a person who looks just like the girl whose life he saved. She tells him he saved her life, and then puts her hand on his head. He calls her "Hime", or princess. Back in the real world, he's surrounded by people who've just seen him mysteriously brought back to life! He runs off screaming, "IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!"
In the park, Recca is sitting on a bench. The girl approaches him (her apron is stained with blood), and thanks him for saving her. She introduces herself as Sakoshita Yanagi, but Recca has no idea who she is, except that she looks like the princess in his dream. Noticing the cut on his hand, she leans over and puts her hand on it. The wound vanishes, and she smiles and says that his wounds are gone now. The crystal ball from earlier is watching them again.
[ Eyecatch - SD Recca throws a huge fireball at SD Domon, Yanagi, and another girl whom we haven't met yet (but for the record, her name is Fuko), and the two girls eat their freshly roasted corn, while Domon falls over, since the fireball hit him. ]
Yanagi says that she's weird, and that she doesn't know why she can do it. He promises her he won't tell anyone. He then apologizes for messing up her clothes, but she says it's ok because they're made for being messed up. Taking off her apron, he looks at her outfit - it's the girl's school uniform of his high school. Recca apologizes for not knowing her (since she goes to his school), but she says it's ok, she's not very social in the first place. Standing up, Recca grabs her hand, and tells her he'll show her something neat. Yanagi smiles at him.
Inside an abandoned warehouse, the two are crowded around a candle. She mentions that it's very dark in here, and he says it's perfect for showing fireworks during the day. Closing his fist around the candle, he opens it again to reveal a handful of homemade fireworks, all lit. Throwing them into the air, they go off with a huge bang. She says it's beautiful, and he says it's beautiful - but they're referring to two different things.
Suddenly, a whirlwind of shadows and wind blows around them, while a woman laughs hysterically. The shadows meet to form a woman, who smiles and says that she's been watching him for a long time, with her Eikai ball (the crystal ball with the claw on it). She introduces herself as Kage Houshi, and that she didn't mean to alarm him, but he would only believe if he saw. Recca is about to dismiss the whole thing, but she says she's been looking for him a long time - four hundred years of looking. Yanagi doesn't believe it, but the woman continues to say that four hundred years ago in the age of civil war, there was a ninja clan that existed named the Hokage. Internal conflict ultimately destroyed them. There are images of a bloody war going on, and then a young ninja woman making symbols with her hands, and then holding a baby toward light, watching as the baby got sucked toward it. Kage Houshi says that he is one of them, sent ahead into this present period using the Hokage technique of time manipulation. [Note - I suppose at this point, you assume the baby is Recca. The baby has a bandage on his cheek, just like Recca does..]
Recca tells her to cut the sci-fi - what does she want from him? She answers, "Let me see your flame." Recca doesn't understand. She continues to say, "You have the power to summon flame from your hands, right?" As she holds up a knife, she says it's the flame technique, inherited from Hokage Ninja Flame Masters. Recca replies that he doesn't understand, and tells Yanagi they should go home. She asks him if he really thinks she'll just let them go. Deciding that they have to fight, he throws a bunch of smoke fireworks at her and dashes off with Yanagi. A knife slices through the air and cuts him in the leg. Before Yanagi heals him, he tells her not to, and that it's just a scratch. Behind them, Kage Houshi says she's sorry, but if he insists on not showing her his flame, she'll just have to force him.
Jumping up and away, he dodges the knife she throws at him, and while fighting up close, she knocks him away. Kage Houshi looks angry and not the least bit affected by his kicks. Recca thinks with his leg, he can't really fight, but that he has to give Yanagi time to get away, but instead, she stands in front of him, blocking him from Kage Houshi. Yanagi nervously says that she doesn't know what's going on, but does Kage Houshi enjoy bullying weaker people? Kage Houshi walks forward and very calmly asks her why she just didn't heal Recca, like she did last time? Yanagi is shocked, and then Kage Houshi very neatly slices her in the arm. Yanagi falls down, and Recca catches her. Yanagi apologizes for being a burden; if he had been alone, he could've escaped. As she falls unconscious, she heals his wound. He realizes that even though she's horribly hurt, she still tried to help him. Images of the princess he saw earlier and of Yanagi flash through his mind, and he thinks that for this girl, he'll...
Kage Houshi asks him with a smile how he'd like to die, as he stands up. She continues to say, "Or are you mad yet?" He throws a whole load of fireworks at the ground, producing a smokescreen. She throws her knife with excellent aim at his form in the smoke, but her knife pins his jacket to the wall. She says, "Utsusemi no jutsu (substitution technique)?" while Recca appears right behind her and punches her, but she dodges away into the shadows and sinks into the ground. Appearing up on the second story, she tells him his ninja skills aren't bad, but that it irritates her that he's not using his flame - or could it be that he has none? They fight for a minute, with her cutting him on the arms and legs.
Recca is knocked face-down on the concrete floor, while Kage Houshi walks over to Yanagi's unconscious body. She wonders outloud what would be if she killed the young girl, and flicks her knife neatly up in the air. Recca is weakly saying, "Stop", but Kage Houshi continues. Just as she begins to thrust the knife down, he yells, "DON'T!" and to his disbelief, flame curls around his arm, curling into a ball in the palm of his hand. Smiling, Kage Houshi says he finally did it, and that it proves he's a descendant of the Hokage Ninja Flame Masters. However, Recca doesn't know what to do with his flame, and after madly moving his arm around, he shoots a stream of flame right at Kage Houshi, who is apparently burned very happily alive. However, she's still alive, and tells him that the little spark he produced (...) couldn't kill her - if he wanted her dead, he had to get stronger. She then vanished into the ground, and a very burnt floor, an injured Recca, and an unconscious Yanagi are all that's left.
Nightime: Recca is carrying Yanagi on his back when she wakes up. She asks him what happened to his wounds and that lady. He calls her "Hime", or princess. Recca says that she is his princess, and he is her ninja! She says that sounds awfully weird, and he says that it's true. She starts to cry tears of relief, and then apologizes for wiping her nose on his back. He winces, but he's not unhappy. The narrator says that Hanabishi Recca has met his destiny in Sakoshita Yanagi, and that their four-hundred year battle has just began.
