[ Notes: From other sites, I have learned that the characters in this show all have different types of speaking - the villagers have a 'country' slang, Kagome and, for some odd reason, Inu-Yasha both speak modernly (even though the latter never stops cussing), and so forth. Sites that I picked this information from are available at Yahoo! if you search with the term 'Inuyasha.' Inuyasha.nu was very helpful in providing translations of terms that I didn't understand. Inu-Yasha is directly translated as 'Dog-Demon' (or something to that extent), which is what Inu-Yasha is, but it's also his name. 'Shikon no Tama' means 'Sphere of Four Souls,' according to the site listed above. 'Kitsune,' which means 'fox,' means in this a mischeveous spirit, like a fox, that plays various pranks. 'Tanuki,' which literally means raccoon, is used in the same sense.]

       The setting is medieval times, Japan. Men are yelling in a village, far in the mountains, as they appear to be running from something. They yell that Inu-Yasha is here. A barefoot young man who has dog ears and is wearing a red outfit, jumps through the air, but is caught by a large net. Swinging his arms out, he smirks as he cuts the nets easily, dodging spears as he jumps above the temple gate (Shinto temple) and goes through, directly into the roof of the shrine. Crashing through, he lands in a crouch, standing up easily. { Screen Shot } In front of him, incense burns around a stand, which is holding a rather plain necklace - but the unusual thing is the glowing orb hanging from it, sparkling with mystical power. { Screen Shot } Inu Yasha smirks again as he walks forward and grabs it with a clawed hand. Just then, the villagers have caught up to him, bursting the door open, shooting spears at him. He jumps out through the roof (he's really jumping), and the men's spears break the incense. As he escapes, the temple explodes. While jumping in the air, he says triumphantly to himself that with this, he can become a full demon! Just as he's leaving the grounds, a beautiful, incredibly pale priestess standing at the gate screams angrily, "INU YASHA!" and with a very tall bow, makes an incredible shot. The string vibrates, giving off sparks as the arrow slams into Inu-Yasha's chest, neatly pinning him (no blood) to a tree. { Screen Shot } He watches, horrified, as the Shikon no Tama falls from his claws, landing onto the ground in front of him. The priestess stands, glaring at him. { Screen Shot } Looking up at the priestess, Inu-Yasha says weakly, "Kikyou... you... how dare you...?!" and he reaches out a claw for her, but closes his eyes in sleep.

       Kikyou weakly stumbles forward, leaving behind a trail of blood - it's all over her right shoulder (the one she pulled back the arrow string and released it with). As she goes to one knee in front of the Shikon no Tama, many of the other villagers run toward her, along with a very young girl with a bandage over her right eye, who is shrieking, "Onee-sama!" [Roughly means 'Great older sister'] As Kikyou picks up the necklace, her sister says that Kikyou's wounds are horrible; they need to quickly treat her wounds! Kikyou replies that it was her inexperience that was the cause of this. Clutching the Shikon no Tama, she says sadly that it was all for this thing's sake - ! { Screen Shot } Kikyou looks at her sister, and says desperately, "Kaede, it's too late, so listen carefully. This is the Shikon no Tama - burn it with my remains, so that it will never fall into evil hands." She looks sadly at it, then winces as she falls to the ground. Kaede is screaming, "Onee-sama!" As Kikyou falls, you see her burning in flames, holding the necklace in her hands, as if in a trance. She says, "Shikon no Tama... I will take you with me to the other world..." The necklace glows as her body swirls in the flames. { Screen Shot }

[Title Screen: Girl Who Crosses Time and Boy Who Was Sealed]

       In modern day Tokyo, a girl's voice curiously says, "Shikon no Tama?" An old man replies that it's good luck. The girl, who is a regular teenager (who, for the record, looks just like Kikyou, only happier and with a tan), holds up a glass ball on a keychain. Rather unimpressed, she asks him if he's selling this? This type of key holder isn't popular! He replies that she's mistaken if she thinks this is just some regular keyholder - after all, back in the old times, this temple was... his voice trails off as they watch her cat bat the precious 'Shikon no Tama' key holder. The girl plays with it.

       The man coughs. He tells her, Kagome, to listen, but the cat falls over as it loses its balance. { Screen Shot } (It looks very silly.) As he tries to finish his history lesson, she interrupts him, and says, "Anyway, Grandpa, do you remember what day it is tomorrow?" He exclaims that of course he remembers his precious grandchild's birthday - and he has a present! She sounds happy, and he gives her his present.

       She has a rather shocked look on her face as she holds up a slimy claw. { Screen Shot } He says that it's a mummified Kappa [Japanese water demon] hand... she holds it out to her cat, and says in a dark voice, "Eat it, Buyo..." and the cat grabs it in its mouth and walks off, much to the horror of the old man. { Screen Shot } In the corner is a box full of tapes, and Kagome sounds rather annoyed as she says it's all history... her house is such an old shrine. At dinner (there is a mother, little brother, her, and grandpa - no father), the grandpa is talking about the 'history of the pickles' that they're eating for dinner, but Kagome says in an annoyed tone that weren't they from Ujiko-san? He sweat-drops. Kagome keeps talking as we have a good look at the temple. She says that it's a thousand year old shrine, along with a concealed well that might have history. Everything has a story about it, and even though people have asked her about it, she's never worried about it... all to the day of her fifteenth birthday.

       The next morning, Kagome's mother hands her a note about a rehearsal. Kagome, saying that she has it, is dashing out when she sees her little brother, Souta, looking sheepish outside the well building. Putting down her bag, she tells him that he knows that he shouldn't play there, near the concealed well. He's holding a bowl of cat food, and says that, well... Buyo... As they look over the well [which is basically a deep pit in the ground - the well is covered by a wooden wall), he says that he saw Buyo around. She tells him to just go down there, then. He says, with a shiver, that it's creepy down there. { Screen Shot } Kagome asks him if he's really a man; what's he scared of? Right then, the wooden cover shakes. He dodges behind her, nervously saying that something is there. Kagome replies exasperatedly, "That's why it's a CAT!" Walking down the steps, the wooden cover keeps shaking. She wonders if something is really there - the sound is coming from the well. She then lets out a scream! Souta screams too, then exclaims, "Buyo!" Indeed, the cat is rubbing itself against Kagome's legs. Kagome picks up the cat, and Souta sighs, saying that she shouldn't scream like that and surprise him. The well cover rattles again... but of course, Kagome is holding the cat. Just then, light blasts out from the well cover, right behind Kagome, who is blankly holding the cat. White, smoky hands reach out from her, pulling Kagome into the well. Souta yells, "Nee-chan!" as she's sucked in.

       In the well, the smoke is solid - she realizes that she's being pulled by a bunch of hands belonging to a demon woman! The demon, clutching to Kagome, says that it's wonderful - she can feel her power and her body returning... A skeleton appears, and around it appears the flesh of a centipede-monster. { Screen Shot } She asks Kagome if she has it - she does, doesn't she? She then licks Kagome on the cheek with a very long tongue, who shrieks, yelling, "Let go! Let go! This is disgusting! LET GO!" and with the last yell, blasts the woman with glowing, pink energy from her hand. The woman is blasted into several pieces, but still very much alive. The demon screams, "I am not letting you get away... SHIKON NO TAMA!" The body falls away from Kagome, who lands unsteadily on the bottom of the well. She thinks to herself that she's in the well... was that a dream? She turns around and sees one of the disconnected arms from the demon, and freaks out a bit. { Screen Shot } Turning up, she yells, "SOUTA! Go get grandpa!"

       As she climbs out of the well, using the vines that have grown around it, she mutters to herself that he must've just ran away. { Screen Shot } As she reaches the top, she's shocked - instead of the building, the well is in the middle of forests and meadows. She calls for her grandpa, mother, brother, and cat, her voice trailing off more and more as she sees more of the forest - and not her temple. She thought she fell in the well in the ancestral shrine, but... where is she? Looking around, she sees the top of a very tall tree. She exclaims, "The Sacred Tree!" She runs happily toward it, thinking that her house is around her. As she runs into the clearing, she's shocked to see a boy, tied up in black vines to the tree, an arrow sticking out of his chest. { Screen Shot } She thinks to herself that it's a boy? { Screen Shot } Climbing up the vines to him, she asks him what he's doing - and notices his dog ears, which obviously aren't human. Kagome thinks to herself (in the cutest voice!) that she wants to touch them... She reaches out and feels his ears. { Screen Shot } He doesn't react. She says to herself that she doesn't have time for this... which is when a bunch of men with arrow and bows yells, "What are you doing there?" They shoot arrows at her, and she throws herself at the body as she dodges. The arrows land around her... { Screen Shot }

       ...And before she knows what's happening, she's tied up on a mat in the middle of the village. All the villagers are looking at her curiously. They say various comments. "It's a girl in a strange kimono!" "Is she a foreigner?" "Could it be war again?" "Right before planting season? We're already short of man power..." "Could she be a fox in disguise?" "That's better than war..." Kagome thinks to herself as she looks at everyone that they all have 'mage' - a Japanese hair knot for men. Where is she? Just then, a man clears through the crowd, saying that Priestess Kaede-sama is here. Behind him is an old woman, with an eye-patch over one of her eyes. { Screen Shot } She carries a bow and arrow, and Kagome thinks to herself that here's another weird hair-do. [Note: This is the young Kaede from the beginning of the episode - not so young anymore.] Kaede throws a good deal of bright dust over her, and Kagome yells at her, asking her what she thinks she's doing. Kaede says that since she was found in Inu-Yasha Forest, she had thought she might've been a specter or mononoke. One of the men says that she could be a spy from another country, but Kaede says there's no reason to attack them - they barely survive as it is. Turning back to Kagome, she looks at her oddly. (Kagome is glaring at her.) Walking toward her, she says, "Let me see your face!" and turns up Kagome's chin, much to her displeasure. She orders her to look more serious, and Kagome grimaces angrily. Kaede says, "You... resemble Kikyou-nee-sama!" Kagome doesn't understand at all.

       Inside a house, much later in the evening, Kaede ladles out a bowl of soup to Kagome, who happily accepts it. Kaede apologizes for earlier, saying that there are a lot of wars going on, and the young ones are ... she continues, saying it's been awkward, since she hasn't forgiven them. Kagome asks eagerly, "This is Tokyo, right?" Kaede says she hasn't heard of it - is that her 'country'? [Note: If Tokyo hasn't been founded yet, this is a long time ago! Also, when she says country, she doesn't mean one outside of Japan - she means another one of the many little factions Japan was split into at the time.] Kagome says that she sorta wants to get home... She wonders to herself how she's going to do that. As she sips her soup, Kaede is still watching her closely. She flashes back to the time when, as a young child, was told by Kikyou to burn the Shikon no Tama with her remains. Setting down her own bowl in the present, she thinks that it has been fifty years since then...

       Outside, something is burrowing around, traveling at amazingly fast speeds underneath the land. It bursts into the village, and screaming is heard from outside the house. Exploding out, it is revealed as the centipede-woman that tried to grab Kagome in the well. Kagome and Kaede run outside, and Kaede asks what it is. A random man yells, "It's a mononoke!" [Note: Apparently some type of forest demon. Not positive - and no, not the same meaning as the one in Mononoke Hime.] Kagome recognizes it, and says, "Ah, that thing!" The 'thing' screams out for the Shikon no Tama, and flies toward Kagome and Kaede. { Screen Shot } Kaede, surprised, asks Kagome, "Shikon no Tama? Do you have it?" Kagome replies frantically that she doesn't know anything about that glass ball. The mononoke keeps blasting around (it's still missing an arm from when Kagome blasted it in the well), impervious to the villagers' attacks with the bow and arrow. As it attacks, Kagome thinks to herself that it must be targeting her... Two of the villagers run up in a defensive position in front of Kagome and Kaede, and one of them says that arrows and spears have no effect. Kaede says that they have to drive it back to the dry well. Kagome repeats, "Dry well?" and Kaede says that it's in Inuyasha Forest. Kagome realizes it must be the well she came from, and asks, "Where is it? Is it toward that bright light?" and takes off running. Kaede yells after her, "What did you say?" but the mononoke blasts a path through them, going after Kagome. Kagome dashes off, yelling that the thing should follow her. Standing up, Kaede says with shock that Kagome can see the forest area that normal people can't... more villagers come running, leading horses as they yell, "Kaede-sama!" She and the villagers get onto the horses.

       Kagome is running down a strip of land between two lakes, toward the bright light shining from the forest. She is wondering frantically to herself if she can survive all of this - can she? As the mononoke draws closer and closer, she asks for help from her grandfather and her mother. Running as fast as she can, she screams out, "Anyone at all, HELP!" As her voice echoes throughout the land, it suddenly focuses all on Inu-Yasha, still pinned in the forest: and in a heart beat, on a burst of light, his right claw moves and sharpens, and he moves, saying rather darkly that he can smell it... the blood of the girl who killed him... she's coming closer...! { Screen Shot } As his claw moves, it bumps into the arrow pinning him into the tree, and it glows. He curses, as he watches it glow. (In other words, he's still sealed, even if he is awake.)

       [Eyecatch: A red-robed claw neatly grabbing the Shikon no Tama from its stand. As it flies through the air, the orb glows, then triples as it forms the Inu-Yasha logo.]

       Still running, Kagome is running up a tall hill as the mononoke yells after her, "Give the Shikon no Tama to me!" Kagome yells back that she doesn't have any such thing. The mononoke blasts towards her, and Kagome barely dodges, and flies through the air from the impact of the blow. She lands in a heap on the ground, right before a tree. She hears a voice say rather nastily, "Hey, Kikyou! What are you doing, with such a wimpy centipede?" She looks up to see Inu-Yasha glaring down at her. { Screen Shot } She thinks to herself, "Did it... just talk?" She asks out loud if it's alive. Inu-Yasha tells her, "Settle this all with a single blow, Kikyou... just like when you killed me... why are you looking at me with such a stupid face? Have you lost your powers, Kikyou-san?" Standing up, she say, rather aggravatedly, "What's with this Kikyou, Kikyou thing? I am going to tell you that my name is..." He interrupts her rather casually, looking up slightly, saying, "It's coooming." It comes down from the tree, and she shrieks - but it's speared and pulled back slightly just in time for her to fall away. You can see that the spears, which have ropes on the end, are being pulled back by villagers. Inu-Yasha smirks, and says that just now was disgraceful. Kagome, still annoyed, walks up to him on the tree root, and glares at him. She yells, "Hey, YOU! Don't make a mistake! Like I said earlier, I'm not Kikyou!" He yells at her, "Don't be so pretentious! NO OTHER girl smells this disgusting except YOU!" He then looks doubtful, and sniffs the air. He says, "You... aren't... Kikyou?" { Screen Shot } Looking thoughtful, he says, "Kikyou is more... feminine... and... gorgeous." Kagome shakes with anger... and is grabbed from behind by the arms of the centipede. Shrieking, "Help me!" she grabs on to the forehanging parts of Inu-Yasha's hair, who yells, "Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow! YOU let go!" { Screen Shot }E As Kaede rides up, she sees Inu-Yasha, and thinks to herself, "Inu-Yasha...? How is it possible that the eternal seal has broken?"

       The mononoke booms out, "Give me the Shikon no Tama!" Inu-Yasha hears that, and with a bolt of realization, thinks, "Shikon no Tama?" [Note: I cannot help but point out that while he thinks this, no one is pulling his hair. ^_^] As it reaches out to bite her with nasty fangs, Kagome finally screams, "STOP IT!!" and, reaching out with one hand towards it, blasts it with a bright light. { Screen Shot } Kagome falls to the ground - along with a few arms of the mononoke. { Screen Shot } She wonders why she can do this... it happened in the well, too. The villagers and Kaede gaze in awe. Kagome looks down to see a portion of her body glowing brightly... the mononoke, now armless, comes flying back toward her, face-first into the glowing portion of Kagome's body. With its mouth, it tosses Kagome into the air, and from a bloody rip in her body, a ball comes flying out. As she's in the air, she wonders if that was possibly the Shikon no Tama...? She falls down, crashing to the ground. [Note: The blood just mysteriously vanished from her uniform...] The orb crashes down in front of her, and Inu-Yasha yells at her, "T-That ball! Give it to me! Hurry!" Before she can react, the mononoke wraps its long body around her and the tree, squeezing Kagome right into Inu-Yasha. { Screen Shot }

       The mononoke leers at Inu-Yasha, and says, "I've heard that some half-demon brat has been looking for the Shikon no Tama... is that you?" He twitches, and Kagome wonders what this guy really is. Inu-Yasha, still talking to the mononoke, says, "Don't take me lightly, centipede specter... A small fry like you - when I use my true power..." Kagome looks up at him, and says, "Hey! You've been talking big since earlier... are you strong?" He says, "Huh?" and she repeats, "Hey, are you strong?" He looks determined. The mononoke replies, "With you pinned up like that, what can you possible do?" As she looks at the arrow, she says, "That is a nice seal..." Laughing, she reaches down to the Shikon no Tama, and tells him to just stay there and enjoy the show. It picks up the Shikon no Tama with its tongue, and glows brightly (while Inu-Yasha curses). Its disconnected arms come back (except for one), as Kagome watches, horrified. It sheds its skin, looking quite purple and speckled, with glowing red eyes and yellow fangs. { Screen Shot } The centipede body tightens around the tree, and Kagome cries out in pain, saying that she can't take anymore...

       Inu-Yasha quietly says, "Can you pull this arrow out?" Kagome looks up. He repeats loudly, "I AM ASKING you if you can pull out this ARROW!" Kagome sees the arrow above her, and moves up slightly. Behind her, Kaede dismounts, and yells, "Don't! That arrow is Inu-Yasha's sealing arrow! You must not free him!" Inu-Yasha yells, "Hey, you ugly old lady! Do you want to become centipede food? If that thing completely absorbs the Shikon no Tama, it's the end!" Looking back at Kagome, he says, "How about it? Do you want to die here, too?" Angry, she thinks to herself that in this place she doesn't even know... Kagome finally screams, "To die... NO!" Grasping the arrow, she pulls with all her strength. It explodes into light, vanishing. { Screen Shot } Kaede, surprised, thinks, "Onee-sama's sealing arrow... it... vanished?!?" The same heartbeats that woke Inu-Yasha up beat again, power coming from Inu-Yasha in beats. { Screen Shot } Kagome softly says, "Inu..ya..sha..?"

       Inu-Yasha starts laughing hysterically, looking extremely insane as he does so. { Screen Shot } The centipede, surprised and frightened, tries to tighten its coils around them. With a burst of gold light, Inu-Yasha is free, and a great deal of centipede coils are in pieces on the ground, along with Kagome. { Screen Shot } Jumping in a neat roll from the tree, he lands in front of the centipede, which lunges at him. He yells some chant (note: unable to understand what he said), and his right claw glows, slashing right through the centipede. { Screen Shot } He gives a chuckle as it explodes into huge chunks.

       Kagome, on the ground, looks around at the pieces of the centipede, thinking to herself that he really is strong. One of the pieces twitches, and she shrieks. Kaede and a few villagers run forward, and Kaede says that she has to find the Shikon no Tama, which should be glowing somewhere in the body. If she doesn't, the body will simply regenerate. Horrified, Kagome looks frantically around. Her gaze lands on a glowing hunk, and says she can see it, over there. Kaede walks forward and pulls out the ball. The flesh vanishes in a huff of dust, leaving only the bones. { Screen Shot } She hands the ball to Kagome, and says that she is the only person who can use this ball. Kaede thinks, "Only you... one who resembles Kikyou-nee-sama..." Kagome tilts her head curiously, and asks, "Why was this in my body? Why me? This type of ball... one that makes demons strong..." { Screen Shot }

       Inu-Yasha steps forward, stepping on the dry skeleton, smashing into dust. He says scornfully, "Exactly! To a human, it's just a useless thing! If you don't want to die from my claw, hand over the Shikon no Tama to me now!" Kagome blinks. Backing up behind Kaede she thinks, "...eh...EHHH?" As she looks at Inu-Yasha, who's glaring at Kaede and her, she thinks, "This guy wasn't a hero?!?"
