So ends an incredibly exhausting week. God, I'm tired.
But though I was tired, I did do this favor for my sis! Mua. And yeah, this apparently only makes sense if you follow college football. (Which I don't.)
Phone Conversation
Joan: Can you do me a favor?
Janice: It depends.
Joan: Take a picture of my Cal bear killing the Texas cow!
Janice: ... o.x
Joan: With weapons!
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~joanlee/cal/
So she put up her favorites there. I also had the bear hanging the cow with an iPod noose, but heaven knows it didn't work out too well. Speaking of sports, football is the one that bores me the most. I swear, shuffleboard is more interesting. Yet our nation is fixated on it, god knows why. I prefer basketball and baseball myself.
In school news, my photo teacher is cruel. You need not know how, you only need know that she is, as Stacy says, "Unreasonable."
When I was walking back to the parking lot, I saw a man wearing a very casual, somewhat beat up T-shirt and shorts. As I approached, I realized it was Mr. McNiff, and I unfortunately started laughing hysterically. But what a great guy - he took my laughter very well and said it was because of the shorts. And who called Nick Kostalas Mr. McNick? Because that's genius, it really is.
Sarah is back in California! Mua. Much love to her. Although she might as well be in the North pole for how often I'm seeing her.. same to Mike, actually. Don't you ever come home?
God, I'm so glad the week is over. Finally. I was in a horrible mood during and after lunch - partially because of Fahad - and of course, she had to ask, "Janice, is something wrong?"
I was angry because she said she'd be at the computer lab at lunch, and she wasn't. I get miffed when teachers carelessly break deadlines - I wonder why? She said it was because another teacher asked her to watch his class - but during LUNCH? And even if she did need to watch them during lunch, why on earth did she agree when she had made a prior agreement with her students? I skipped Computer Club to come down to the library, wait for her and study for her damn quiz, only to realize that of *course* she wasn't coming.
And then she asked me what was wrong. I like her as a person and I don't always participate in the group mocking that the people in front of me do (although I admit, peer pressure is a powerful force), but I can't justify her breaking an agreement with her students. It's not okay for her to do that, and perhaps I'm pushing it a bit far, but I think she was out of line.
That, and I can't believe she said, "Even Hitler was right about some things." (Even in-context, that line sounded bad.)
THINGS WRONG WITH THIS WEEK- my Photo teacher assigning three photos due today (I gave up god knows how many lunches for all this)
- me possibly bombing my chemistry quiz
- my math test: "Oh, Janice, didn't you know that #8 didn't add up to 1, so it's not a proper density curve and thus not subject to any normal rules? My goodness!"
- my computer lab not working for two weeks (although I must thank Earl, since he fixed it in the end)
Erin said I'm too cynical, so let's make a list of happy things! Tee hee.
THINGS GOOD ABOUT THIS WEEK- I did manage to get my photos in on time
- I'm not religious
- I'm not Republican
- I posed a Cal bear killing a Texas cow (the Texas is of particular importance, as I hate that entire state right now)
- Andrew said I'm not a complete asshole (ha)
- Stephen Oakley finally realized that I'm ignoring him
- I didn't let loose and scream hysterically and slap my group members
- It's over.
I feel like throwing out a manga title at you people. Already recc'd Hiroki Endo to Mike, but why not throw poetic/sadistic philosophy on life with dirty jokes thrown in at all of you?
"For Those of Us Who Don't Believe in God" ==> Download through BT only.
"Platform" ==> Completed Projects | Endo Short Stories | Volume 1
"For Those of Us" is probably a better quality story (and it's rife with some anime jokes which you'll only understand if you've watched Eva and BSSM), but Platform (Parts I & II) are disturbingly romantic, so I felt obliged. No, this is probably not on a Lolita quality literary level, but I enjoy it nevertheless. Um, because I don't know what most of you normally read: warning for dark themes and nudity.
Evidence Of a Monopoly
The damn camera store on San Jose and Glenoaks has upped the price in film by more than a dollar. Why? Because they're perfectly aware that Burbank and Burroughs students in Photo don't buy their film and paper anywhere else. Rawr.
While Reading Wuthering Heights
[me reads that Heathcliff is a dark, handsome and mysterious stranger]
Random people: Isn't he wonderful?
Me: -_-;
I was biased from the beginning, but I'm not enjoying this book. Bronte's writing doesn't have the sly and wonderful quality present in Jane Austen's writing (comparable because they're from the same period), and no, she doesn't need to write like Austen to be an excellent writer, but I dislike it anyway. Plus, Heathcliff is coming off as such a flat and ridiculous character. People argue that Darcy is more of a woman's fantasy of a male becoming more sympathetic to the feelings of others, but at least he's not a dark, dangerous male with a handsome face and a mysterious past. Good god. I suppose I need the same suspension of reality for this that I retain while reading romance novels, but for whatever reason, it's not clicking on. (Sorry, Taleen and Tanya ;P I'll argue it with you later.)
And since I have a Key Club project tomorrow, this entry needs to stop. (Mike, you can stop IMming me now.
)
Spoken words: 14 have fallen.
Heathcliff is a loser. He's almost as bad as Holden. Christ, don't get me started on either them.

Andrew, I adore you.
- I'm not Republican
Ouch, man, ouch.
- I didn't let loose and scream hysterically and slap my group members
When you do, take pictures. You'll get an 'A' in photo AND amuse me greatly.

hey!! I'm back.
Anyways, I hope things get better and I agree...the math test was stupid...grr...
Well, hope your Key Club project went well.

Andrew: I actually agree with you on that.
Sarah:
Well, my photo teacher would have to say that there's a strong center of interest (for once).
Jessica: CONGRATULATIONS.
I don't think you need to worry about a math test now that you've gotten into UPenn! Damn, way to leave the rest of us behind.
So much for visiting Berkeley, ha. Anyway, remember us in twenty years, kay?

Indeed Mike, Indeed.

What?
Posted by Andrew @ 12/21/2004 10:27 PM PST
Hush, Andrew, don't strain your brain. He's a fork. It's shiny.
Posted by Sarah @ 12/22/2004 12:05 AM PST
And who called Nick Kostalas Mr. McNick? Because that's genius, it really is.
Oh my. That's beautiful.
And the Texas/Berkeley Massacre! I like how the bear has this expression of grim inevitability -- he didn't want to do it, but it had to be done.
- I'm not religious
- I'm not Republican
You'll marry me, then? Excellent.
As to Wuthering Heights -- this is the third (well, two-point-fifth time, since I half-read, half-skimmed that second time) I've read it, and it's duller each time. Maybe your Romance Novel mode isn't switching on to save Heathcliff because this is supposed to be important, high-quality literature.
Which it is, in a way, once you get down to the symmetry and foreshadowing and themes and stuff, but the characterization and style are Not Terribly Exciting. Not as bad as Henry James, whom I think writes as if he were in pain -- looking at all my favorite writers, they seem to have this joy in language and storytelling that he lacks -- but still not good.
Another strike against it is that it does exactly what so much romantic, dramatic literature/art does in that it glorifies all the worst, most damaging facets of romantic love (Moulin Rouge, I'm lookin' at you), sometimes to an extent that you could argue its not being love at all. Although I get the feeling (hope?) that Bronte knew this. Still, it makes sense that it seems a bit puerile and naive in all of its efforts to attain High Drama, since she was highly isolated and the only great romances she probably saw involved two cows or whatever animals they have in Scotland.
Yeah. I need people to talk to.

Mike, words do not describe. And have you *watched* the Evangelion movie yet? Owwwww.
Sarah: Would you like me to kill myself and possibly others on the freeway? I love you, darling, but not enough to commit vehicular homicide.
And I didn't know Andrew's brain was a fork - in fact, I was just about convinced that it was a potato...
Christina, I'm not sure what Scotland has, other than the fact that Casey says that country produced him. So other than Albino goats..
See? Not being religious and not being Republican brings good things to me.
On the Berkeley/Texas Massacre (eh-hem, correct order *please*) - everyone likes the picture of the bear cutting off the head of the cow. I think it reminds them of dinner?
Oh, the foreshadowing is quite interesting, and even if I don't like her style of writing, the descriptions of some of the buildings are interesting enough, if not fascinating, but I suppose it's just not my cup of tea.
What irritates me about the Bronte sisters is the idea that since they lived in the tragically whistling moors, they had an appreciation of darker life that only they could infuse into their writing, thus making it superior to all else. Additionally – and this is quite apparent in Wuthering - they took the place they lived in, made it as dreadful as possible, and reveled in their unhappiness. I know people in class slam me for being a pessimist, but I appreciated The Secret Garden (don’t bug me, it was a good book
) in part because it took those same, miserable moors, stated that those who lived there had the opportunity to look into the harshness for the beauty inherent. It is, of course, a matter of perspective, but while reading Wuthering, I get this gloomy woe-are-all-of-us feeling, partly stemming from the moors and partly from Heathcliff. Since we’ve already concluded that I don’t like the characterization of Heathcliff…
On a lighter note: HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE COMES OUT ON JULY 16TH. MIDNIGHT PARTY. MUAHAHAHA. Yes, that means I already reserved my copy - how could you think otherwise? And no dark comments from Mike about why this series sucks, because he’s the one obsessing over Evangelion. [cough*otaku*cough]
On a much-lighter note: saw Lemony Snicket, not as good as the books, Violet was irritating teh cr@p out of me halfway through the movie, but I just want to eat up the boy who plays Klaus – he’s adorable.

You'll never get anywhere if you don't actually...go anywhere. Irrational fear is unhealthy, darling.

I shudder to think what this means for me.

Funny, I wanted to rip out her larynx by the end of chapter one, book one. Maybe I should skip this movie, eh?
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE COMES OUT ON JULY 16TH. MIDNIGHT PARTY. MUAHAHAHA.
Damnit. I'm going to miss my last chance for a Harry Potter party with you. I was so seriously hoping I'd get at least one...oh well, I'll call you from Missouri the next day...seeing as we will both be up all night finishing it, yet again.
